Waste-to-energy Plant Contractors Selected
Construction of the Salo waste-to-energy plant is ready to begin as the Lounavoima Oy Board of Directors came to an investment decision on Wednesday regarding the building of the plant. Lounavoima is concluding agreements with contractors selected through public tendering.
Together with experienced plant suppliers, Lounavoima is going to build a waste-to-energy power plant utilizing mixed municipal waste in the Korvenmäki district of Salo. The construction costs of the waste-to-energy power plant will be about 112 million euros.
The plant will be erected in four procurement packages. The grate boiler and steam turbine processes will be supplied by Steinmüller Babcock Environment GmbH, a German company with technology that has been implemented in Finland earlier, for example, at the Tammervoima waste-to-energy power plant.
The flue gas treatment systems will be supplied by Lühr Filter GmbH, likewise a German company. In turn, the grab cranes that feed waste to be burned will be supplied by Konecranes Finland Oy. Fira Oy, another Finnish company, will be responsible for all the other construction, such as the foundation work, the waste reception hall and the waste bunker, as well as a separate office and maintenance building also featuring a visitor centre. The estimated domestic content of the plant is about 40 percent.
The plant suppliers were invited to tender through negotiated procedures in accordance with the Procurement Act and the first of these procedures began already in the spring of 2018.
“The plant suppliers are good and experienced. We are very satisfied with the results of the tendering,” states Petri Onikki, Managing Director at Lounavoima.
Excavation Work to Begin in January
Building the waste-to-energy plant is beginning with excavation work at the end of January. The placement of the plant will utilize the existing landforms, but some blasting work will be performed before starting the foundation work of the buildings.
The actual construction of the waste-to-energy plant can begin according to plan at the end of March. The objective is for the waste-to-energy plant to use waste as fuel for the first time in January 2021. The plant, producing district heat and electricity, will be fully completed and tested in June 2021.
