Progress of the waste-to-energy plant project in Korvenmäki
Lounavoima was founded
12/2017
Founded on 4 December 2017, Lounavoima Oy is a local Waste-to-Energy company. Lounavoima is owned by Lounais-Suomen Jätehuolto Oy (50%) and Salon Kaukolämpö Oy (50%).
The company is building a Waste-to-Energy (WtE) combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Korvenmäki, Salo. The plant produces local energy from unrecyclable solid municipal waste.
Petri Onikki begins duties as Managing Director
05/2018
Petri Onikki (MSc Technology, Energy Technology) was appointed Managing Director of Lounavoima Oy. Onikki joined Lounavoima from his duties as Business Development Manager at Fortum. As Managing Director of Lounavoima, Onikki is responsible for launching the young company’s operations and forming its organisation. The most important task in the near future is completion of the WtE plant project, including everything from plant design and construction to its opening.
Environmental permit May 2018
05/2018
On 7 May 2018, the Regional State Administrative Agency (RSAA) issued a positive decision on the environmental permit for the Korvenmäki WtE plant. Receipt of the environmental permit is a major step in the progress of the project. Construction of the plant will begin in accordance with the terms of the permit decision.

01/2019
The project is being carried out on the basis of several tenders in the procurement package. The selection of each component provider will be made in December.

Earthworks begins
01/2019
Excavation and earthworks, which include roads, connections and foundation work, will begin on the WtE plant site.
Construction begins
03/2019
Building foundation work to begin. The plant will be built adjacent to the existing waste processing centre and in close proximity to Highway 110.
The ground slab for the waste bunker will be laid
05/2019
The slab for the waste bunker will be the largest single pour (by mass) of the entire plant site.
Installation of power and district heating connections
05/2019
A procurement decision will be made concerning installation of the 20 kV underground cable between Korvenmäki and the Ylhäisi power station as well as construction of a district heating pipe from Korvenmäki to the Salo city centre.
The boiler supplier will begin work on the site
10/2019
The delivery of boiler structures and components to the plant site will begin. Component assembly and boiler construction will begin.
The waste cranes will be installed
11/2019
The waste cranes runway beams will be installed in the waste bunker building, followed by installation of the large overhead crane bridges. The waste cranes are used to feed waste into the incinerator.
The flue gas treatment supplier will begin work on the site
12/2019
Preparations for installation of the flue gas scrubbers will begin
Recruiting of plant operational personnel
03/2020
The plant will bring 15-20 new permanent jobs to Salo.
The turbine will be installed
07/2020
Installation of the plant power generation equipment, which converts steam energy into electricity.
The first waste load will be processed
11/2020
The plant will begin receiving waste fuel for test runs. The WtE plant can be reached on Highway 110, using the existing intersection to the Korvenmäki waste processing plant. Waste shipments will arrive on weekdays from 7:00am to 10:00pm.
The first heating of the boiler will be done
11/2020
The WtE plant will begin starting up for operation and the auxiliary burners will be tested for the first time.
The first waste load will be incinerated
03/2021
Waste fuel will be used for the first time as the plant fuel. During the test run, the performance and output of the entire plant will be tested. The commissioning of the plant will last approximately 6 months.
Plant reception
11/2021
After approved test runs, the plant will be transferred to Lounavoima. The plant will produce 90% of Salo’s district heating needs, thus replacing the fossil fuels currently used for Salo’s district heating network.
